Shorts petition has 12000+ names. Media going to wire services Melbourne has stuff on YouTube

Side discussion: Dealing with Hijacking

Melbourne experienced an altercation between three individuals and two socialist groups, the three individuals claimed to be there 'protesting on their own' seperate to the rally body, and the two socialist groups were there to push their materials seperate to the rally. Melbourne Sydney and Brisbane experienced some issues with socialist groups pushing their materials, but also reasonable behaviour from others. Of specific note was an issue in Sydney whereby the socialist group in question blockaded the main entryway to Town Hall Square with tables so that attendees must pass through them to gain access to the rally. (Names expunged until wiki secured).

DELEGATED: fifers to make official contact and liase with socialist and anarchist groups; to see how we can work together; to report back

Emphasis on DLC being apolitical

Additional Media Manager

Current situation: Val & Jeronimo.

Send tricky political media issues to fifers / Val.

Media Manager Task

  • Observe which media's using our name / reporting us
    • Contacting them with thanks
    • Correcting any minor areas
    • Thanking them
  • Reminding them that given Australia's horrible press censorship, we stress that the filter will impact on Journalists rights. Ie: Kosovo or Iraq where Journalists Bloggers got stuff going on. Ie: it would block the hate speech of war and reduce journalists' capacity to report.

DELEGATED: Jeronimo (bless him, he volunteered)

Discussion of possible state media positions, need to be coordinated through Jeronimo.

STATES: TO DISCUSS AND REPORT ON MEDIA OFFICERS

Membership officers

We need people.

Urgently required to consolidate contacts into members, members into activists.

Suit a highly social individual, even if inexperienced in activism, requires a high level of contact with new individuals, and to call people who gave information.

STATES: TO DELEGATE A PERSON AS MEMBERSHIP OFFICER BEFORE NEXT NATIONAL MEETING

DELEGATED: All organisers to drum up their friends & contacts to get involved right now

DECIDED: Monthly donation system for "gold members"

Other cool stuff a membership officer can do with gold members include piss-ups, social functions, dinners, triva competitions. These are also a useful way to build support and funds.

Sponsorship Officers

We need money.

We need people who'll go out and hunt down support in the financial sense. Someone who scrubs up good, and can make contact with Charitable Organisation networks (Lions, Apex, Rotary, etc) both for support and advice on gaining support.

TABLED: To around 5 January due to shutdown

STATES: To discuss potential Sponsorship officers and report to National

Side discussion: Finance Status

Current status: no bank account, (bank was dicks).

We do have paypal, but we can't expend from that.

Our financial system will be above board entirely.

Side discussion: Facebook woes

When your event hits about 1000 people you can't message them any more. Melbourne and Sydney reported this problem.

DELEGATED: fifers to contact Brisbane regarding their new facebook thing, and how it works, for nation wide implementation

A young man who is expert at using Social Networking for policy / political goals contacted us to volunteer. His past campaigns have been very significant. Val has contacts.

Side discussion: Prospects for long term struggle

Need not to let DLC collapse as we agree the government will keep coming back to the issue, regardless of who is in power. Also a general desire to roll back censorship laws in Australia. Our basic structure is for the long haul struggle, even if we do defeat the filter easily!

DECIDED: DLC is for long term action, set up resources / legacy for future anti-censorship activists.

The DLC: WHAT / HOW / WHO / WHY?

Adelaide suggested a basic DLC cheat sheet for Marshals etc doing the basic run down.

The constitution will help here.

PREVIOUSLY DELEGATED: Val is working on the constitution, will submit to national TABLED: National to debate constitution DELEGATED: Val to produce the What / How / Who / Why cheat sheet once constitution debated and decided.

"Is there a monthly rally/We should have one in January" etc ---> er thought the next was to be March as far as rallies, clarify this.

  1. We are so on for March in March
  2. But we're exhausted a bit
  3. But national major media said "Monthly"
  4. And we have to do Orientation weeks at Universities

Melbourne people wanted a march in January. Discussion of March. Melbourne opposed due to purposelessness of the proposed march, due to security / marshal trouble. Val concurred raising strategy issues: public opinion; the government hasn't implemented and demonstrated unreasonable behaviour. Melbourne concurred.

DECIDED: Do something other than a march in Melbourne.

Adelaide wanted to do bigger and better than before, to try out stuff from last time. Discussion of tempo, general agreement on low tempo, but each state finding its own way. Discussed that the purpose of protests is to reach the general public directly, or through the media.

DECIDED: January to be a low tempo event or events over 26 January Long Weekend. States could do one, or both of, examples such as various exciting media stunting ideas (success via media), to handing out pamphlets (success via number of pamphlets distributed).

Canberra Reports

ACT had 110-120 rock up, most brought signs, it was awesome. People there were really glad it had been organised, very savvy about the filter. REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO MARCH. Got offers of help from Greens.

Two in One: Locating experienced activists / lobbyists / analysts / skilled people ...and... Excitable new activists / lobbyists : how to use.

Need to avoid overwork. Need to make ourselves feel better by having contact with like minded supporters. Need more people on board. Need to delegate more.

Ideas: Contact likeminded organisations to engage their activists in common cause, ie, in relation to Political parties (Wet Liberals, Democrats, Greens, some Socialists, ALP rank and filers).

Ideas: Use your own social networks.

DELEGATIONS: fifers (Snr Lec Comms, Darlington local networks); Val (UWS Comms HOS / Profs, Aust Entertain Indus.); EVERY SINGLE ORGANISER who you know, and how they can help

Need to develop standard operating procedures on Flyering &tc so we can make use of other people, without having to rely on them being fully with the DLC.

STATES: To discuss flyering SOPs and circulate their proposal for flyering standard operating procedures at national
